Seeing & doing
Algámitas
Algámitas is a small traditional Spanish village with just over 1,200 inhabitants. There are several small grocery stores (a great bakery, fish stores), bars, a church, the village square and two banks. Algámitas is essentially an agricultural community with an emphasis on olives, mixed grains and sunflowers.
If your into hiking, the surrounding countryside is pristine and there are many trails you can use. You are more or less free to go wherever you want.
The nearest village is Villanueva de San Juan. This village and Algámitas are known as the “forgotten villages” because time has almost passed. Life continues largely as it has for decades, even though the car and tractor have largely taken over from the mule. However, the goat herders still watch over their herds in the fields and on the hills. The tinkling of their bells is an ever-present sound in the silhouette of the countryside. Going on a hike? Then always take water with you and never underestimate the power of the sun! Hiking in the area passes through beautiful countryside ranging from olive groves to mountain trails.
Algámitas is centrally located in Andalusia. Several cities are less than an hour’s drive away, such as:
* Seville 102 km * Cadiz 147 km * Malaga – 97 km * Ronda – 49 km * Antequerra 61 km
* Marbella 107 km * Granada – 156 km * Cordoba – 121 km * Estepona – 110 km
